sustainable manufacturing for space

Date: Tuesday 11th March 2025

Time: 15:00 – 14:00

Location: Room 16, ExCeL London

In-space activity is set for exponential growth in the coming years putting increased focus on the way we design, manufacture and operate space products to preserve Earth’s atmosphere and declutter the space environment. As we increase and diversify the range of commercial services for LEO we need to ensure the foundations are in place to keep sustainability and cooperation as key consideration. Further, as technology advances, unsustainable practices borne out of necessity, need to be challenged when considering the scale they will be operating at in the coming years. Eco-friendly design and manufacturing practices coupled with design for demise with minimal environmental impact will set the course for a space economy available to all.

This 1 hour interactive workshop run by members of the Environmental Task Force (ETF) will look into the challenges, barriers and opportunities for ‘Sustainable Manufacturing within the Space Industry’. How environmental sustainability has a key role to play within the UK’s space manufacturing sector.

The objective of this workshop is to discuss sustainable manufacturing practices and technologies that can be applied to space hardware and infrastructure. The session will give an overview of some of the key Insights on sustainable manufacturing trends for space such as ‘Launch Emissions’, ‘Satellite Burn-up’ and ‘Reusability’. Discussing why Space sector companies should consider sustainability from the outset both from a business and orbital environment perspective.

The session will explore these themes in an interactive style, delving into some of the key issues faced, what are the alternatives, and how can we support the sector to be more environmentally sustainable. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in table discussions on how they are looking to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations and what barriers they face.

The session looks to close with a greater understanding of the challenges industry faces, but also discuss support mechanisms to enhance sustainable manufacturing within the space industry. The ETF looks to facilitate support to  organisations looking to engage in sustainable manufacturing process and contribute to the progress being made in the Space Sustainability: A Roadmap for Scotland.
