Materials Finishing – The Process Formerly Known as Polishing

SAG-Tek is the materials finishing Division of Zeeko Ltd (the manufacturer of high end optics polishing machines for astronomy and satellite applications).

The newly formed SAG-Tek specialises in a number of different materials finishing techniques all based on the ductile grinding process cleverly re-engineered to be easily applied to regular CNC machines.

This new and simple process is known by the collective name of “SAG” (Shape Adaptive Grinding). Each solution is equivalent to a well-known engineering process more commonly known by names like chamfering, deburring, toolmark removal, smoothing, finishing, polishing and optical polishing.

The processes run automatically on the same CNC machine as the “prior operation” using the same software, same coolant and similar toolpaths (to what went before). The process is well suited to billet machined components as well as the rough surfaces of 3-D printed parts which it can “SAG” without any prior operation. This presentation will show the techniques, the tools and the results as well as the future vision for processes where the primary milling/ turning / grinding operations are combined with SAG to remove the toolmarks as they are formed all in one pass of the combined tool.
