Driving Global Benefits from Commercial Space through Effective Partnerships and Governance

The rapid expansion of orbital data mining is transforming space into a critical extension of global digital infrastructure. Despite the surge in Earth observation data, AI-driven analytics, and in-orbit processing, significant progress is still needed to bridge the data divide and achieve the 2030 SDG targets. Additionally, the growing congestion in space is placing immense pressure on space assets, threatening access to space for all and our ability to leverage space-based solutions in years to come. In this keynote, the UNOOSA Director will highlight the important and urgent work ongoing at UN level to bridge the data divide and ensure space safety. Key themes will include:

•  The need to harness the expanding commercial market for satellite data to support the communities who need it most.

•  The need for a harmonised global approach to minimize collision risk and enhance space safety.

•  The risk of fragmentation in governance, where national and commercial interests outpace international cooperation, leading to long-term sustainability challenges.

Without strong political will and a commitment to rising above geopolitics and commercial interests, our future access to space is at risk. This keynote will emphasise the critical role of international collaboration in shaping policies that balance economic opportunity and the responsible stewardship of space.
