The satellite communications industry has embraced 5G as an enabler for integration with terrestrial networks. This integration allows flexible wide area networks, which can enable new business applications, especially mobility use cases. Many operators are now exploring implementing other 5G features, such as software-defined networking, 5G cores, and 5G radio. Working groups will soon start on the specification of 6G, which may bring a full integration of satellite and terrestrial mobile communications. This panel will explore how 5G is enabling new opportunities for the Space industry, such as direct-to-handset communications, and discuss the route to 6G.
